TC film power caps provide a dramatic improvement in performance over any electrolytic capacitor, enabling tube amp power supplies to achieve a new level of responsiveness. The recent availability of metalized polypropylene films as thin as three microns and the specialized winding equipment required to work with such films, have made it possible to combine self-healing properties with unprecedented volumetric efficiency. The smaller form factors make an all-film power supply more practical than ever for a wide range of applications.
The ESR (Equivalent Series Resistance) of a TC film cap is up to several orders of magnitude lower than an electrolytic capacitor. This enables the capacitor to remain charged at all times and to quickly deliver higher peak power when required. ESL (Equivalent Series Inductance) is also many times lower than an electrolytic. This reduces distortion and phase shift and ensures that there are no delays or ringing in response to step changes in demand on the capacitor. The dry construction of a film capacitor extends lifetime relative to an electrolytic cap. In an electrolytic capacitor, the gradual evaporation of electrolyte reduces capacitance and increases ESR, leading to degraded performance and eventual failure. TC is non-polarized, ensuring simplified assembly. The TC range is available in granular voltage ranges between 450Vdc and 1800Vdc. The higher voltage ratings eliminate any need in circuit design for complex series/parallel connections and balancing resistor networks.
When selecting a film capacitor to replace an electrolytic, consider that due to the minimal heat loss and faster transient response of the film cap, a relatively low-capacitance film cap may typically be provisioned. OEMs that have implemented the technology have successfully used TC to replace electrolytics in ratios of capacitance from 1:2 to 1:10.
· The latest TC range utilizing profiled film is available in 450Vdc, 600Vdc, 900V ratings (higher voltages available upon request.) The legacy version of TC that employs segmented film (SEG) is available at 700Vdc rating only
· The new TC range is stocked in two form factors: (1) a premium version with 4-pole Kelvin terminations and a blue-tinted acrylic dampening capsule, and (2) a standard version with two M6 studs and an aluminum can in blue heat-shrink
· The tinted blue acrylic/Kelvin version offers appealing aesthetics for applications in which the capacitor will project through the top of the chassis. The aluminum can/M6 stud version can be special-ordered with an optional M8 / M12 base mounting stud for secure mechanical mounting if required.
Optional Four-pole Kelvin Terminations
A few manufacturers of electrolytic capacitors have traditionally offered four-pole configurations that improve circuit performance by enhancing current flow and filtering high frequency noise in the LRC network formed by the capacitor and its four leadouts. When suitably connected, Kelvin connections decouple high frequency power supply noise from the signal path. The optimal connection routes both B+ rail and power supply ground through the capacitor prior to fan out through the chassis. If the amplifier has a common ground plane that cannot be separated and routed through the capacitor, then some of the advantage of the Kelvin leads is preserved by routing B+ through the cap and connecting common ground to co-joined ground leads on the capacitor.
